_____________________________
/ 9.8  Treasure Hunt I, The /__________________________________________________
-----------------------------

Who's involved:  Tim, Bob, Your Dog  the rest of the town is the supporting cast

NOTE:  Make sure you buy at least 15 bags of each vegetable seed.  Trust me,
you will need them later on.

-  To start off this ending, you must become best friends with Tim and Bob.
Start loading Tim up on eggs and Bob up on sweets (usually Very Berries work
great).  At the same time, make sure you have trained your dog up to five
hearts.  Go to Chapter 16.4 for more about training your pooch.

-  After a few days, Tim will visit you at the farm.  He will exclaim that he
has found a treasure map and ask if you are willing to help him dig up
buried treasure.  The next scene shows Tim and you in the Walnut Forest
(next to the Cafe and Bar).  Tim, using the map, counts off steps to where
exactly the treasure is buried.  Once he finds the spot, your character
starts digging.  Eventually, you dig up a treasure chest.  Upon opening the
chest, you find a lot of old junk and toys.  Bob then appears on the scene.
He explains that he buried this chest when he was a kid and had forgotten
about it.  At the time, the stuff in the chest was important to him.  The
   scene ends.

-  Continue to give gifts to Tim and Bob.  After a few more days, Tim will once
again visit you at your farm.  This time, he states, he has found a real
treasure map.  It has to do with a treasure in the Sacred Land of Praria
Forest.  Tim is clueless on this but he has made a copy of the map and gives
it to you.  Guess it's time to do some investigating.

-  Talking to the townspeople yields few results.  None of them really have a
clue about the sacred land.  Only the Goddess gives you a hint in stating
that if you have a smart doggie, then you will be able to find the Sacred
   Land.

DO NOT, under any circumstances, go into Clove Villa.  If you do, you will
activate the Dia CS and you will end up doing the Treasure Hunt II ending.

-  Continue to visit the townspeople and give them gifts.  Again, you may end
up activating a few endings by doing this.  Don't worry about it, just
concentrate on this ending.  Be sure to constantly talk to and give gifts to
   Bob and Tim.

-  There is no set time or day for this CS to happen (mine happened on a Sunday
morning).  One day, when you are making your daily visits to Clove Villa, a
CS will occur.  Your dog (you can leave your dog on the farm) will run away
from your character and head toward the Villa.  Martha will come out and
wonder what's going on.  After a quick explanation, you notice your dog
heading for a hill to the left side of the Villa.  When your character
approaches, your dog and you are transported to the Sacred Land.

-  Tim appears and states that he heard your dog barking.  Tim further
compliments your dog on its ability to find this area.

-  As Tim, your dog, and your character go farther into the Sacred Land, you
notice a large stone tablet in front of you, a field in front of it with
strange markings, and a well.  Tim and your character examine the tablet for
a minute.  Then Tim looks around and states that the Sacred Land looks more
like a wasteland as he departs.  If you read the inscription on the tablet,
it reads, "Plant crops as land tells you and gold will appear".

-  The tablet explains in further detail about what crops to plant.  Remember
all this weird markings on that plot of land?  Well, those markings have a
meaning.  You have to plant a certain crop as designated by the marking.
   The markings are:

    -  Star:  Root Plant (Potato)
    -  Square:  Yellow Plant (Corn)
    -  Musical Note:  Brown Plant (Breadfruit)
    -  Heart:  Red Plant (Tomato)

-  Also, if you make a mistake by putting the wrong seeds down, you can use the
hoe to undo that mistake.  In addition, if you obliterate the symbols by
hoeing and forget what they are, come back the next day and they will be
   there again.

-  The field is a 5x5 grid and it is marked like this as you are facing the
   stone tablet:

            Legend:  ST=Star; SQ=Square; MN=Musical Note; HE=Heart

                         +----+----+----+----+----+
                         | HE | HE | MN | SQ | SQ |
                         +----+----+----+----+----+
                         | HE | HE | MN | SQ | SQ |
                         +----+----+----+----+----+
                         | MN | MN | MN | MN | MN |
                         +----+----+----+----+----+
                         | ST | ST | MN | HE | HE |
                         +----+----+----+----+----+
                         | ST | ST | MN | HE | HE |
                         +----+----+----+----+----+

-  Your task is to plant the specific crops in these areas and take care of
them until they are ready to be harvested.  This will mean going up to the
land every day and watering them.

-  After 8 days has passed, when you enter the Sacred Land, a CS will occur.
Your character will walk in and notice a treasure chest sitting on top of
the ground next to the stone tablet.  At this time, Tim enters and exclaims
that your character has found a treasure.  Upon opening the chest, Tim
states that it looks like seeds.  He further states that it might be a rare
flower and asks if he can grow it.  Your character hands him the bag of
seeds and Tim is off to plant them.

-  Lyla, being the generous soul that she is, has agreed to let Tim borrow a
little part of her flowerbed to grow the seed in.  Continue to visit the
Flower Shop area daily (unless it's raining).  After 3 days, a CS will
occur.  Tim will show up at your farm and state that the flower has
sprouted.  You both head back over to the flower bed and exchange con-
versation as to what this flower may be.

-  After a week has passed, Tim show up at your farm.  He will state that the
flower is blooming.  So the both of you head back over to the Flower Shop
to see this flower.  Lyla comments on how the flower glows and Parsley
states that it has a golden light to it.  Lyla then remembers that her
grandmother told her that this flower bears golden fruit.  Parsley departs
   to research this.

-  2 days will pass then Tim will be knocking on your front door again.  He
tells you that they are ready to dig up the golden fruit.  You both head,
yet again, over to the Flower Shop.  You will see Lyla and Parsley also over
there.  When the fruit is dug up, Tim comments that it's only a plain
potato.  Woody and Gwen stop by to see the dig.  Parsley comments that it is
a golden sweet potato.  It is incredibly hardy and nutritious.  It was
rumored to give eternal life and was nicknamed the "Fruit of Happiness".
Woody gives a more practical tale stating that it was the only food they
lived on when they first moved into the homeland.  Gwen suggests that they
have a Sweet Potato Festival.  Everybody agrees on it being the next day.

-  The next day, head over to the Carpentry Shop Area.  There will be a lot of
CS so I will briefly give an idea of what is going on.  It opens with Woody
instructing Bob, Joe, and Kurt to get the tables set up.  As the scene pro-
gresses, Martha and Gina enter and have a quick conversation.  Your
character heads up the hill and chats with Bob, Gwen, Ronald, and Wallace.
Woody comes over and tells about what it was like to first settle the area.
Parsley then comes up the hill.  Apparently he has sent the potato to a lab
and they are very interested in it.  With a little work, they can use it to
feed hungry people.  Parsley further states that there will be no theme park
or anything else since the land holds a lot of potential.

-  After the ending, Tim, your dog, and your character are busy walking around
your farm.  Tim states that he heard that the homeland will remain as it
was.  Tim further states he is happy because he will always want to return
to somewhere that he knows.  He states he will be going out adventuring and
wants your character to stick around to hear his stories.  After Tim
departs, your character looks up to the sky.  Fade out.

/ 9.9  Treasure Hunt II, The /_________________________________________________
------------------------------

Who's involved:  Tim, Bob, Dia with minor roles by Martha and Gina and the rest
of the town is the supporting cast

NOTE:  Make sure you buy at least 15 bags of each vegetable seed.  Trust me,
you will need them later on.

-  This starts out exactly as Treasure Hunt I.  This time, instead of using the
dog, Dia is the key to solving this ending.

-  After you get the second map, go up to Clove Villa and chat with Dia.  It
may take a few Blueberries but once she is sufficiently buttered up, a CS
will occur.  She will tell your character she has no clue about this Sacred
Land.  She will, however, research this and get back to you on it.

-  Now, you need to visit her most every day.  I say most because you will need
to meet her outside Clove Villa during the hours of 12-4p.  As you continue
to feed her blueberries, she will ask if you will lend her an ear.  She will
only give you pieces of her story so this will require a lot of trips.
Eventually, her story is basically she was left at Clove Villa in the care
of Martha and Gina by her parents.  She wants to talk to them and also wants
to be grown up.  All this eventually ends with her thanking your character
for helping her out.  Quite a change from the snobbish brat she started out
   as.

-  Once she thanks your character for helping her, the stage is set for her
visit.  There is no set time so continue to butter her up.  Eventually she
will visit your farm one fine morning.  She will state that her research has
yielded results and she knows how to get into the Sacred Land.  The next
scene shows Dia and your characters looking at a hillside on the left side
of Clove Villa.  Dia states that the gateway is around here somewhere.
After a little searching, she finds it.  Dia and your character are then
   transported to the Sacred Land.

-  After you enter, you will notice a large stone tablet in front of you, a
field in front of it with strange markings, and a well.  Dia will lead your
character up to the stone tablet to read the inscription.  The inscription
reads, "Plant crops as land tells you and gold will appear".  Dia states
this seems rather cryptic and departs.  Now, read the stone tablet to under-
stand what's going on.  Below is the solution to this puzzle.

-  The tablet explains in further detail about what crops to plant.  Remember
all this weird markings on that plot of land?  Well, those markings have a
meaning.  You have to plant a certain crop as designated by the marking.
   The markings are:

    -  Star:  Root Plant (Potato)
    -  Square:  Yellow Plant (Corn)
    -  Musical Note:  Brown Plant (Breadfruit)
    -  Heart:  Red Plant (Tomato)

-  Also, if you make a mistake by putting the wrong seeds down, you can use the
hoe to undo that mistake.  In addition, if you obliterate the symbols by
hoeing and forget what they are, come back the next day and they will be
   there again.

-  The field is a 5x5 grid and it is marked like this as you are facing the
   stone tablet:

            Legend:  ST=Star; SQ=Square; MN=Musical Note; HE=Heart

                         +----+----+----+----+----+
                         | HE | HE | MN | SQ | SQ |

                         | HE | HE | MN | SQ | SQ |
                         +----+----+----+----+----+
                         | MN | MN | MN | MN | MN |

                         +----+----+----+----+----+
                         | ST | ST | MN | HE | HE |
                         +----+----+----+----+----+

-  Your task is to plant the specific crops in these areas and take care of
them until they are ready to be harvested.  This will mean going up to the
land every day and watering them.

-  After 8 days has passed, when you enter the Sacred Land, a CS will occur.
Your character will walk in and notice a treasure chest sitting on top of
the ground next to the stone tablet.  At this time, Dia enters and exclaims
that your character has found a treasure.  Upon opening the chest, Dia
states that it looks like seeds.  She further states that it might be a rare
flower and asks if she can grow it.  Your character hands her the bag of
seeds and Dia is off to plant them.

-  Lyla, being the generous soul that she is, has agreed to let Dia borrow a
little part of her flowerbed to grow the seed in.  Continue to visit the
Flower Shop area daily (unless it's raining).  After 3 days, a CS will

told her that this flower bears golden fruit.  Parsley departs to research
   this.

-  2 days will pass then Dia will be knocking on your front door again.  She
tells you that they are ready to dig up the golden fruit.  You both head,
yet again, over to the Flower Shop.  You will see Lyla and Parsley also
over there.  When the fruit is dug up, Dia comments that it isn't golden,
it is black.  Woody and Gwen stop by to see the dig.  Parsley comments that
it is a golden sweet potato.
Dia then runs off back to the Villa.

-  The next day, head over to the Carpentry Shop Area.  There will be a lot of

feed hungry people.  Parsley further states that there will be no theme park
or anything else since the land holds a lot of potential.  Dia then
approaches your character and tells you that she will visit his farm later
to give him the dish she has made.

-  After the ending, Dia shows up at the farm.  She hands the character her
dish that she has made.  Your character reacts to the bad food and Dia
apologizes for it and promises to practice cooking more.  Dia states that
she is happy at Clove Villa and is glad that your character is her friend.
She has learned that niceness is much better then selfishness.  She then
states she is in love with your character and gives him a kiss.  Fade out.

+==================================+
| 10.  LOGICAL APPROACH TO ENDINGS |===========================================
+==================================+

In this chapter, I just wanted to give a quick opinion on doing the endings.
As you progress through each ending, you will acquire more stuff, which in turn
will make getting the other endings quicker and easier.  This is kind of a
snowball effect that by the time you are working on the last ending, you
probably will have more stuff then you need.  Again, this is just the approach
I think would work great.

-  When you start on your first ending, this is the time to start building up
money and items.  That means crops and livestock.  A great ending that is
easy to get is the Bluebird Ending.  You will get the flute from Louis first
thing so you can start training your dog.

-  Once you have a trained pooch, you can get cattle since your dog can now
herd them for you into the barn.  Concentrate on making money since this
ending is very easy to get.  By the time winter rolls around, you should be
sitting pretty good for buying a kitchen and other necessary items.

-  The next ending should be the Fishy Story Ending.  The first couple of times
you talk to Joe, he will give you the crummy fishing rod.  That's alright
since you can catch a few small fish.  Using your new kitchen, you can fry
or put them in a pot.  Since Joe likes cooked fish (he won't take your small
fish unless they are cooked), then you should be able to progress through
this ending.  By the end, you should be catching large fish on a regular
basis.  Again, you should have a lot more money.

-  The Goddess Dress Ending makes a good next choice.  All you have to do is
bribe Gwen with fruit, Dia with blueberries, and Katie with cheese to get
this ending going.  A couple of eggs to Louis and you're on your way to
   finishing it.

-  The Endangered Weasel Ending is another easy ending to get without spending
   too much time bribing people.

-  Another easy ending is the Horse Race Ending.

-  The Azure Swallowtail Ending is another easy ending to get.

-  By this time, your cows and chickens should be producing gold milk and eggs
respectively.  This makes a good start to do the Cake Contest Ending.

NOTE:  The above four endings can be done in any order.  They are done to allow
you to get maximum production out of your farm since the endings them-
selves don't require a lot of time to work on.

-  This sets the stage for the Treasure Hunt endings.  By now, you should have
everything you need.  I suggest selling off everything you own and not
planting crops.  You will need to devote all of your time bribing the towns-
people and trying to get these endings.  Plus, there is a lot of time
   involved to unfold the plot.

Again, this is just a suggested route.  I know there are many other ways but
these are what I consider a logical way to do the endings.

+============================+

Below are maps to the 9 areas of the homeland.  I didn't include one big map
since you can get a big overview when you press the OPTION button.  In these
maps, I will note where different things are.  In addition to the obvious
buildings, I will also list where you can find the different items for
foraging.  See Chapter 12 for foraging of items.  The maps will start at
Goddess Lake and go clockwise.  The key for all of the maps is:

* :  Areas marked with this will be explained below the map.
BB:  Blueberry
CB:  Cranberry
MB:  Moonberry
MF:  Moondrop Flower
MU:  Mushroom
PM:  Pink-Cat-Mint Flower
RO:  Random Object - These are things like herbs, walnuts, weeds, flowers, etc.
VB:  Very Berry

/ 12.2  Fishing /______________________________________________________________
----------------

Fishing is actually pretty easy once you get the basic principals down.  This
section is based on personal experience from fishing.  After catching in excess
of 200 fish, I've gotten a pretty good idea of how to fish.

-  Of course, the first thing you must do is get a fishing rod.  You can get a
fishing rod from Joe during the Fishy Story ending.  Once you have rod in
hand, you are ready for the big time.

-  I've found that the best time for fishing are as follows:

   -  Early morning.

   -  Evening from sundown to about 1am the next morning.

   -  Rainy days.

-  To fish, obviously go to Maple Lake.  While you are standing on the shore,
select your fishing pole and press the SQUARE button.  This will equip you
   with the fishing rod.

-  To cast out the line, you hold down the X button and let it go.  The sooner
you let go of the X button, the closer to shore you will cast the line.

-  Every time you cast, you will catch something.  All you will see is a small,
medium, or large dark shadow under the water.  You won't know what it is
   until you haul it ashore.

-  A set of four arrows will appear around your fishing lure.  When one of
these arrows moves, you have to move the L3 Analog Stick in that direction.
At the same time, you should be using the X button to reel in the fish.

-  Some fish fight.  This is obvious from the way the fish splashes around
while on your line.  There are some methods to prevent the fish from
   getting away.

   -  Method one is to briefly let go of all the controls and then reapply them
      again.

   -  Another is just to ride the fish out ensuring that you have the rod
pointed in the direction the fish is fighting in.

-  Continue to move the rod and reel in the fish.  Eventually, success will be
yours.  You will either catch a fish, boot, or can.  It's random but the
odds are, if you only go for the big shadows, you will only catch the big fish.

-  Keep in mind, the first rod Joe gives you will only catch small fish and a
couple of medium fish.  You will need the Silver Rod from the Tool Shop to
catch the medium and big fish.

-  There is a very large fish in Maple Lake called the "King of the Lake".  It
is like the Silver Fish in that it won't be directly under your line.  You
must move your fishing line to the fish.  Your reward is a very large fish
and a huge fish icon next to your Silver Fish icon (if you completed "A
   Fishy Story" ending.

Some things in the homeland just can't be foraged for, you will actually have
to buy them.  Of course, items that you have foraged can put a couple of G in
your pocket.  The trick is, to figure out who buys or sells what.  In addition,
shops do keep regular hours and sometimes may be closed.  Businesses will be
listed clockwise starting at the Cafe and Bar.  I will list the information
about the businesses in the homeland in the following way:

| 14.  THE TOWNSPEOPLE |=======================================================
+======================+

These are all the people in the town.  Each person has particular character-
istics that you must have knowledge of.  This is especially important when they
are an integral part of an ending.  That way, you don't have to waste time
trying to figure out their likes and dislikes.  The result is that you can get
to the ending a lot quicker and it will be a smoother transition.

| 15.  TOOLS OF THE TRADE |====================================================
+=========================+

In order to run your farm effectively and to also forage, you need to have
tools.  Some tools are already provided to you and some you may have to buy or
get given to you.  Below are listed the tools that you will use in the game.

 ______________
/ 15.1  Brush /________________________________________________________________
--------------

Used on your cows and horse to make them feel good.  Purchase at the Tool Shop.

 ____________________
/ 15.2  Fishing Rod /__________________________________________________________
--------------------

Obviously, it's used to fish.  Unfortunately, it mostly catches small fish and
junk.  You obtain this from Joe during the Fishy Story ending.

 ______________
/ 15.3  Flute /________________________________________________________________
--------------

Use this to make music and to train your pooch.  You get this from Louis during
the Bluebird ending.

 ____________
/ 15.4  Hoe /__________________________________________________________________
------------

In order to plant your crops, you have to break up the dirt first.  This is the
tool just for that job.  You start out with this tool.

 _______________
/ 15.5  Milker /_______________________________________________________________
---------------

All that love and attention you are giving to your cow won't mean much if you
can't have the milk.  Purchase this at the Tool Shop to make sure Bessie feels
real good.

 ______________
/ 15.6  Seeds /________________________________________________________________
--------------

What good is a farm if you don't have crops.  There are four types of seeds:
Breadfruit, Corn, Potato, and Tomato.  These can be purchased at the Flower
Shop.

 _______________
/ 15.7  Sickle /_______________________________________________________________
---------------

Use this to chop down grass in your pasture to make fodder.  This tool only
will chop down one square of grass at a time.  Can also be used on crops that
have died or crops you no longer want.  You start with this tool.

 _________________________
/ 15.10  Silver Fish Rod /_____________________________________________________
-------------------------

Kurt will give this to you after performing a task for him.  Only available
during the Fishy Story ending.

 ___________________________
/ 15.9  Silver Fishing Rod /___________________________________________________
---------------------------

After you demonstrate that the fishing rod Joe gave you sucks, he will ask
Louis to get a good rod in.  This rod can only be found and purchased during
the Fishy Story ending.

 ______________________
/ 15.10  Super Sickle /________________________________________________________
----------------------

The "turbo" version of your sickle.  It will cut down three squares of grass at
a time.  It also can be used on errant crops.  This tool, along with the
sickle, are used to create fodder.  It takes 3 units of grass to make 1 unit of
fodder.  Can be purchased at the Tool Shop.

| 16.  FARMING AND WILDLIFE |==================================================
+===========================+

Life on the farm would be incomplete if you didn't have soil to till and
animals to raise.  This chapter describes in detail all the wonderful things
associated with farming and taking care of your wildlife.  In addition, it also
discusses about how to obtain the dog and horse.  It will also tell you how to
get that dog or horse in tip-top condition.

 ______________
/ 16.1  Crops /________________________________________________________________
--------------

One of the many things you will want (or need) to do is to plant crops.  You
have 8 fields with two rows per field (lengthwise) to plant crops.  In this
game, however, you don't just plant the crops and that's it.  Nope, it's a
little more involved.  You must make sure that they are watered every day plus
you must harvest them when they are ready for picking.  I have listed the times
for the crops to grow to harvesting  and the harvesting time between pickings.

          +------------+--------------+---------------------------+
          | CROP NAME  | TIME TO GROW |   TIME BETWEEN HARVESTS   |
          +------------+--------------+---------------------------+
          +------------+--------------+---------------------------+
          | BREADFRUIT |    8 DAYS    |           4 DAYS          |
          +------------+--------------+---------------------------+
          | CORN       |    8 DAYS    |           3 DAYS          |
          +------------+--------------+---------------------------+
          | POTATO     |    4 DAYS    | NONE. MUST PLANT NEW ONES |
          +------------+--------------+---------------------------+
          | TOMATO     |    7 DAYS    |           3 DAYS          |
          +------------+--------------+---------------------------+

Planting crops is an easy thing.  Get the seeds.  Then use your hoe to break up
the ground.  Next, put the seeds down using the SQUARE button.  Then water.
Repeat for each batch of seeds.

NOTE:  When you are using the hoe, you may end up getting extra goodies such
as money, rocks, minerals, and roots.

 _________________
/ 16.2  Chickens /_____________________________________________________________
-----------------

There are two ways to obtain chickens.  You can purchase eggs from Ronald's
Supermarket for 50G apiece, or you can get them from the Farmer's Shop for
300G.  It all depends on how quickly you want to get into the egg business.
Regardless of which route you choose, you must keep a few things in mind.

-  If you put the egg in the incubator, it takes 4 days for a chick to be born.
Then it takes another 5 days until you have a chicken that is laying eggs.
In essence, all you need is one egg and you can fill your coop up with your
   6 chickens in no time.

-  On non-rainy days, make sure you leave your chickens outside to forage.  It
not only saves on the feed bill, but it also increases their potential to
   lay golden eggs.

-  If you must keep them in the coop, remember to feed them.  If you have less
then 6 chickens, fill only the food bins that correspond to a chicken.  You
can see what chicken has what feed bin by looking at the name on the bin.

-  Always remember to talk to your chickens every day, it will give you a good
idea on their health plus if they are ready to lay a golden egg.  If a
chicken has been out on sunny days for more then two days (means you left
them outside) and they are really happy, their probably will be a golden
   egg under them.

-  If they happen to get sick, use the Animal Medicine on them.

-  Check the status as described in Chapter 8.3 to see the mood of your
   chicken(s).

 ____________
/ 16.3 Cows /__________________________________________________________________
------------

They can only be purchased through the Farmer's Shop and it costs 2500 per cow.
Once you have made your purchase, the cow will be in your barn waiting for you.
To get the cow from baby to a gold producer will take some work on your part.
Keep the following things in mind when raising cows.

-  It takes 10 days for a calf to become a milk-producing cow.

-  Remember to brush and talk to your cow every day.

-  On non-rainy days, put them into the pasture to graze.  This saves on the
fodder and will also increase their potential to give golden milk.

-  If you must keep your cows in the barn, remember to put fodder in their feed
troughs, brush them, and talk to them.

-  As it is for chickens, if you leave your cows out for more then two days,
they are giving large milk, and they are really happy, their probably will
be golden milk waiting to be taken.

-  Again, if sickness strikes, heal them with the Animal Medicine.

-  If you choose to breed you cows, then use the C.M. Potion provided by the
Farmer's Shop.  It takes 10 days for a calf to be born.  Keep in mind that
you cannot milk a pregnant cow.  You can, however, continue to brush and
   talk to it.

-  You can get further info by checking the status as described in Chapter 8.3.

 ____________
/ 16.4  Dog /__________________________________________________________________
------------

When you first start the game, you will notice a couple of stray dogs running
around.  One looks like a hound dog with a red scarf around its neck.  The
other looks like a husky with a blue scarf around its neck.  When you approach
either dog, they will take off away from you so that you cannot catch them.
Here's the trick in getting yourself the dog.

-  Every morning, without fail (even if it rains), put a weed into the dog
dish.  For some reason, everything you put into the dog dish turns into dog
food.  Weeds get you nothing on the market and you can't give them to anyone
so this is a good use for them.

-  As the days progress, you will notice one of the dogs that was running
around the town is now running around your farm.  The test to see if the dog
will become yours is to chase it.  If you can catch the dog and hold it,
then the dog is yours.  You will also confirm this by the game asking you to
give a name to the dog (It took me about 13 days to get the dog).

-  You will start out with no hearts.  This basically means the dog kind of
likes you but won't go out of its way to work with you.  In order to get
that heart count up, it's time to do a little training.

-  The first trick is getting the dog to come to you when you whistle.  Press
the L1 button every chance you get.  At first, the dog will make a half-
hearted attempt to come to you by starting to come to you and stopping
midway.  You then need to go to the dog, pick it up, and talk to it.
Continue to do this and you will get up to three hearts soon.  This is the
maximum you can go without the flute.

-  Once you get the flute, start practicing by having your pooch do tricks.
There are six possible tricks you can do (I only really used the Heel and
Run tricks).  Continue to do this and you will notice that your dog responds
faster plus your dog will quickly follow your commands.  By this time, your
dog should be up to five hearts.  Once this has happened, you are ready for
   the Treasure Hunt I ending.

These are the hearts, for the dog, as they progress:

1 Heart  - He is starting to like me.
2 Hearts - He comes to me when I whistle.
3 Hearts - I think he's starting to run faster now.
4 Hearts - He is getting smarter and he listens to what I say.
5 Hearts - A man's best friend.  He is my buddy.

With the flute (refer to Chapter 8.1 if you don't know how to use the flute),
you can make your dog do tricks.  These are the tricks you can make your dog
do:

Sit    -  Up, Left Down
Lay    -  Up, Down, Down
Heel   -  Left, Right, Right
Run    -  Right, Left, Right
Jump   -  Left, Up, Right
Sit Up -  Down, Up, Up

NOTE:  Remember the Run Trick.  It will come in very handy for getting your
cattle back into the barn instead of you having to spend all day
       fighting them.

 ______________
/ 16.5  Horse /________________________________________________________________
--------------

You can only get the horse by working at Brownie Farm.  Also, you can only get
part-time work if it isn't raining.  The rate of pay is 50G/hr.  Now, it's time
to get yourself a championship thoroughbred.

-  Go to the Farmer's Market every non-rainy day.  Talk to Bob and he will ask
if you want to work part-time.  Of course you do.  He will then ask if you
know what you're doing or if you need a quick training on the equipment.
Make sure you give Bob some sweets every time you visit.  A Very Berry will
   do nicely.

-  After this, you will be put out into the pasture with your trusty brush and
milker.  There are 5 horses and 1 cow you must care for.  Start in whatever
order suits your fancy.  The key is, you must brush each animal and talk to
it.  You will know when you have accomplished both of these tasks because
you will see a heart above the animal when you brush it and another when you
talk to it.  In addition, your character will comment about each animal.

-  The comment will be "I wonder if he bites" for all of the horses and the
usual hoping the cow gives good milk.  Every day you take care of the
animals, though, your characters comments will change.  After a couple of
days, you will comment to a couple of the horses on how great they look or
how happy they seem to be.

-  After about 7 days, you will be complimenting all the animals and not
worrying about them biting you.  This is your cue that you will soon be
   getting a horse.

-  In about 2 days after the above, Bob will visit your farm one morning.  He
has brought a horse for you to take care of.  He comments that he is
impressed at the way you took care of his animals and he wants to know if
you will care for this horse.  The reason is that he wants you to train this
horse for the races.  Of course you agree and now you have a horse to raise.

-  At first, when you attempt to even get on the horse, it will rear up.  Just
keep brushing and talking to it.  In addition, put it in the pasture on non-
rainy days (except for real humid days where you do want to keep your horse
in the barn).  There is no real timeline for this but as you continue to
care for the horse, the number of hearts increases.  At one heart, you will
be able to get on the horse and ride slowly.  See the Horse Race ending for
the CS associated with these events.  You will soon be at 5 hearts in no
   time.

These are the hearts, for the horse, as they progress:

1 Heart  - We are getting along better.
2 Hearts - He can run now.
3 Hearts - He is running faster now.
4 Hearts - Top speed.  He runs like the wind.
5 Hearts - He is confident he won't lose to anyone.

| 17.  GUIDE TO COOKING |======================================================
+=======================+

You may not be the galloping gourmet, but once you get a kitchen added to your
house...watch out.  These are some of the recipes that I've found although I am
sure there are many others.  Please feel free to e-mail me some that I have
missed and I'll be sure to include you in the credits.  You have three utensils
you can cook in.  These utensils are a frying pan, pot, and an oven.  Depending
on what you use ingredient and utensil-wise will have an impact on whether you
produce something edible or something out of a horror movie.

| 18.  GAINING EVEN MORE ENERGY |==============================================
+===============================+

You start the game with a certain amount of energy.  There are, however, 5
Power Berries spread out across the land.  When you get a Power Berry, your
stamina permanently goes up.  Listed are the locations of and how to get these
power berries.  I have listed them in the order that I got them.  You can get
them in any order.

Power Berry 1:  You can get this one when you are busy hacking down grass in
your pasture.  It is randomly placed in your pasture.

Power Berry 2:  You get this one while you are fishing.  You reel it in like
any other fish and you won't know what it is until you bring
                it ashore.

Power Berry 3:  The 3 bumbling Sprites disturb your sleep one morning.
Apparently Flak is missing and they think he has been eaten.
A CS shows everybody hunting for Flak.  You all eventually find
him in your field.  It appears that he fell asleep.  In
gratitude, the Sprites give you a Power Berry the next morning.

Power Berry 4:  You will receive this one from the Harvest Goddess.  Go up and
make a wish using whatever you can find (except rocks) to get
her attention.  After she has given you your wish, throw in a
vegetable.  She will give you a heart and state how much she
loves vegetables.  Do this 30 times (remember, only on non-
rainy days) and she will give you a Power Berry as a gift.

Power Berry 5:  You will get this Power Berry by tilling the land in the Sacred
Land.  It may appear at once or you may have to give the ground
a few whacks in one place.  This is another randomly placed
                Power Berry.

Power Berry 6:  Obtained by plowing your fields.  (NOTE:  This is just a rumor
and it has not been confirmed as of yet.  Natsume states that
there are only 5 Power Berries.

| 19.  COMPLAINING ABOUT THE WEATHER |=========================================
+====================================+

Harvest Moon:  Save the Homeland is a game that is broken up into 4 seasons (or
months) or 30 days each.  Within each month, there is a particular weather
pattern.  The basic weather patterns are wet, mild, and dry.  This isn't to
say, however, that other weather can occur during a specific period (i.e. wet
weather during the dry season).  This is more the normal type of weather for
that period.  Make sure you watch your TV every morning to get the weather
report for the next day.  If it is going to be rainy or humid, bring your
animals indoors.  Otherwise, let them enjoy the fresh air.  I've found if the
chance of rain is greater then 50%, then it will probably rain.  This doesn't
always happen, but it seems to happen a lot of the time.  Below are listed the
seasons and their weather patterns:

     Spring:

 1st to 16th:  Mild
17th to 21st:  Rain
22nd to 30th:  Dry

     Summer:

 1st to  4th:  Dry
 5th to 20th:  Mild
21st to 26th:  Wet
27th to 30th:  Dry

      Fall:

 1st to 19th  Mild
20th to 24th  Wet
25th to 30th  Dry

     Winter:

 1st to  7th  Dry
 8th to 16th  Mild
17th to 21st  Wet
22nd to 30th  Mild

| 20.  CONCLUSION |============================================================
+=================+

Harvest Moon:  Save the Homeland is a very involved game.  With the possibility
of 9 endings, you have to make a lot of choices to decided which path to
follow.  In addition, with all the other side things such as running a farm and
interacting with the townsfolk, you can get bogged down real easy in a lot of
detail.  I've had my joys and frustrations with this game as I was putting this
guide together.  This guide, though, was a lot of fun to write and I hope you
get as much enjoyment out of reading it.  If you do have other ideas or
thoughts, please e-mail me and share them.  Who knows, maybe I'll start a Q&A
hapter in this guide if enough people ask the same questions.  Anyway, thank
you again for reading this guide.
